Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly this week will announce he
won't re-sign with the club and instead will test out retirement,
The New York Times reported.
An announcement was expected Tuesday. Manager Joe Torre said he
had no idea of Mattingly's plans.
Mattingly, 34, would not retire officially and could return to
the Yankees or another club if he discovered he missed the game.
The Yankees would pursue free-agent first baseman Fred McGriff or a
trade for Seattle's Tino Martinez, Oakland's Mark McGwire or Texas'
Will Clark. Mattingly hit .288 with seven homers and 49 RBI in
128 games last season but batted .417 with a homer and seven RBI in
the playoffs.
